Martha and the Vandellas Discography -
A Thrilling Live Wire Act
Some of the titles in the Martha and the Vandellas discography trumpet an outgoing, outreaching take on love and life. "Come and get--"! "Watch out!" "Dance party!!" Drums, bass, and horns often add to the urgency.
Arguably, they were the least girlish of the Motown girl groups--in the stereotypically passive, pining-for-my-man way. The Vandellas' voices don't just adorn Martha Reeves's leads. They punch holes through the air to announce themselves. Their R&B/gospel style is so enlivening that they could shower the punched-out bits over listeners like confetti!
Martha Reeves isn't incapable of sweetness or fear. In fact, her delivery is so intense that weeps become wails, charms become aphrodisiacs. Yet she doesn't exaggerate emotions. She simply presents them honestly so that we hear the froth or the prickles up close. Even the sugar cubes in her voice have sharp corners.
Later Martha Reeves songs didn't capitalize on her challenging vocals as much as her Motown songs had. At least she got a solo shot at all after the company moved!
This Martha and the Vandellas discography runs through the '60s and '70s, and includes Martha Reeves albums until the end of the latter decade.
