Jr. Walker and the All Stars Discography -
A Jolt From the Blues
The Jr. Walker and the All Stars discography represents a rhythm-and-blues oasis among Motown's airbrushed pop-soul songs. Instead of heading uptown, the band takes listeners down, down as far as Memphis, Tennessee, and back, back into hairier, old-school R&B and jump blues that scorch more than they sparkle.
Junior Walker's high, on-pitch yells blend well with the gritty music. His lack of vocal polish makes his balladeering seem heartfelt.
Junior Walker's truest voice speaks through his sax, whether it screeches boisterously or courts romantically. The band's songs owe much of their emotional soul to him.
As you'd expect, the All Stars are no slouches, either! During each man's time, Tony Washington and James Graves solidly beat the beat out of the drums. Willie Woods's guitar twangs practically sprout rootsiness, and his shadow-vocals thicken the texture. Vic Thomas's organ buzzes with a grander kind of energy.
This Jr. Walker and the All Stars discography presents the
Junior Walker albums
of Motown and elsewhere until the band's last recording hurrah in the 1980s.
